Ophthalmology

Ophthalmology is the specialty that deals with the anatomy and diseases of the eye. Ophthalmologists may often perform surgery to treat eye illnesses.

Ophthalmologists at Parkway Medical Center are board-certified surgeons who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Parkway Medical Center’s ophthalmologists treat patients who have a wide range of disorders, including:

  • Cataracts
  • Diseases of the retina
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Glaucoma
  • Macular degeneration
  • Strabismus, ptosis and amblyopia

Ophthalmologists are physicians who specialize in comprehensive vision and eye care. In the United States, in order to become an ophthalmologist, the practitioner must complete four years of college, four years of medical school, and an additional four to five years of specialized training. Ophthalmologists are the only eye care practitioners who can prescribe glasses and contact lenses, provide treatment and manage the prevention of medical disorders of the eye, and perform surgeries.
